Portulaca oleracea extract is a substance extracted from the dried whole herb of Portulaca oleracea L., a plant of the Portulacaceae family. Purslane is sour and cold in nature. It enters the large intestine, liver and spleen meridians. Purslane is an annual fleshy herb distributed in most parts of the country. It grows in fields, wastelands and roadsides. The whole plant is smooth and hairless, 20 to 30 cm high. The cylindrical stems are flat or obliquely upward and diverge from the base. The sunny side is often light brown or purple; the leaves are alternate or opposite, the leaves are thick and fleshy, obovate or spoon-shaped, 1 to 3 cm long, 5 to 14 mm wide, the upper leaf surface is dark red, and the lower leaf surface is dark red; the flowers are yellow and small, with 5 obcordate petals, usually 3 to 5 clusters in the axils of the branches; the brown capsules are short conical and cracked. 1. Antibacterial effect The ethanol extract of purslane has a significant inhibitory effect on Shigella and Paradysenteriae flexneri. The decoction can inhibit Shigella, Sonnei, Steinernema and Freund's Shigella. The ethanol extract and decoction of purslane can also inhibit Escherichia coli, Proteus, Salmonella typhi, Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. It also has an inhibitory effect on pathogenic fungi such as Trichophyton duronii.
2. Effects on the cardiovascular system The water extract of purslane stems and leaves can constrict the rabbit aorta in a dose-dependent manner and weaken the myocardial contractility. The extract can also increase blood pressure in rats. Phentolamine can offset the arterial vasoconstriction and pressor effects of this extract, atropine and cyproheptadine have no effect on its pressor effect, propranolol can slightly reduce its pressor amplitude, while guanethidine and tetrodotoxin have no effect on its pressor effect. Increasing the extracellular Ca2+ concentration can weaken the effect of the extract. It is suggested that the water extract of purslane may act on post-synaptic α-receptors and exert its effect by blocking the influx of Ca2+. Other experimental results show that the juice and boiling water extract of fresh purslane can increase the contractile force and contractile velocity of myocardium in a dose-dependent manner, and can be completely blocked by propranolol (2.1×10-5) mol/L.
3. Effect on smooth muscle The juice and boiling water extract of fresh purslane can increase the tension of the isolated ileum of guinea pigs, increase the amplitude, and increase the frequency. The effect is similar to acetylcholine (Ach), which is dose-dependent and can be slightly blocked by atropine. The above extracts can also relax isolated tracheal strips and are completely blocked by propranolol. It has also been reported that the water extracts of purslane stems and leaves can relax the colon of guinea pigs and the duodenum of rabbits in a dose-dependent manner, and phentolamine can counteract this effect.
4. Effect on skeletal muscle The methanol, ether and water extracts and dialyzable components of purslane produced a bidirectional reaction of increased twitch tension at the beginning and then long-term continuous relaxation on the diaphragmatic muscle specimens of the diaphragmatic nerve of rats, and significantly reduced the twitch/rigidity ratio of contracture caused by K+ and caffeine, and alleviated abdominal muscle contracture caused by nicotine. The muscle relaxant nitrofurantoin could not weaken the increase in twitch tension caused by the above extracts, but it could partially weaken the abdominal muscle contraction caused by the above extracts at high concentrations. In addition, the dialyzable components can relax chicken muscles. The muscle relaxation effect of the above extracts may be related to Ca2+ in the extracellular fluid.
5. Effect on increasing blood potassium. Those who took 40 mg of cotton phenol maintenance dose each time were given purslane extract tablets (15 tablets/day) or purslane licorice decoction (62.5 grams/day). After taking the medicine, blood potassium could be increased, and the purslane licorice decoction had a significant effect. It is believed that the degree of increase in blood potassium is directly related to the high potassium salt content of purslane.
6. Effect on the uterus Fresh purslane juice or purslane extract has a contraction effect on the in vitro and in vivo uterus. When parturients take 6-8 mL of fresh purslane juice orally, the frequency and intensity of uterine contractions increase. Purslane injection has a significant excitatory effect on the in vitro uterus of guinea pigs, rats, and rabbits, and the in situ uterus of rabbits and dogs. 2 mL of purslane injection (equivalent to 5-10 g of fresh purslane) has a stronger effect on contracting the uterus than 0.2 mg of ergonovine, and 4-6 mL of purslane injection has a similar effect to 10 U of posterior pituitary hormone. The water-decoction alcohol-precipitated extract of purslane has the strongest effect on contracting the uterus, the acidic alcohol extract has no significant effect, and the alkaline water-extracted alcohol-precipitated extract has an inhibitory effect on the mouse uterus.
7. Effects on the small intestine and other effects Fresh juice and boiling water extract of purslane have a dose-dependent acetylcholine-like effect on the isolated ileum of guinea pigs, which is similar to the effect of prostaglandin E on intestinal smooth muscle, increasing the contraction tension, amplitude and frequency. It has also been reported that the water extract of purslane has an inhibitory effect on the isolated small intestine of guinea pigs. Water-soluble and fat-soluble extracts of purslane can prolong the life of some alloxan-induced diabetic rats and rabbits, but do not affect blood sugar levels, which may be related to improving lipid metabolism disorders in animals. The ω-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids contained in purslane have a cholesterol-lowering effect, and are rich in vitamin A-like substances, which can promote epithelial cell growth and facilitate ulcer healing. In addition, purslane has a diuretic effect on rabbits.

Used as medicine

1. Used for heat-toxic bloody dysentery, tenesmus. You can use purslane alone to decoct or retain enema, or you can use fresh juice to drink. If used with scutellaria, coptis, and plantain seeds, the efficacy can be enhanced. If it is pure bloody dysentery, it should be used with whitehead, coptis, and qinpi. It is now commonly used for acute bacillary dysentery. In the season of bacillary dysentery, use this product to decoct water instead of tea to drink, which has a preventive effect.
2. Used for red and white leucorrhea and damp-heat gonorrhea. For leucorrhea, it can be used with elm bark and cuttlefish bone Chemicalbook; for gonorrhea, it can be used with stone reed and plantain seeds.
3. Used for blood in the stool, hemorrhoid bleeding, hematuria, functional uterine bleeding and postpartum bleeding caused by blood heat. It is often used with dandelion, sophora japonica, madder, and thistle.
4. It is used for various symptoms of heat and toxicity, such as sores, carbuncle, erysipelas, hemorrhoids, eczema, ringworm, lacquer sores, etc. Portulaca oleracea can be taken orally or applied externally. If it is used together with honeysuckle, dandelion, purple gentian, etc., the effect can be enhanced.
