Stevia extract is a substance extracted from the leaves of the Compositae plant Stevia sterviarebaudiana. The main active components are glucosides, and steviol glycosides are used as sweeteners, which have the functions of lowering blood sugar, lowering blood pressure, promoting metabolism and treating hyperacidity. Stevia is native to Paraguay and Brazil in South America, and was used by Paraguayan residents to make sweet tea more than 400 years ago. It was named Steviarebaudiana by the botanist Bertoni in 1905 and has been in use since. In 1955, the artificial nursery cultivation experiment was started. In 1964, Enrigue de Gasperi in Paraguay was successful in the field transplantation and domestication of stevia. In the late 1960s, this plant was valued by many countries and regions. It is grown in large quantities in Japan, Singapore, Malaysia, Korea, Israel and China. Since Japan banned cyclamate in 1969, stevioside has been paid more attention. However, due to its incomplete human toxicology and metabolism data, only 8 countries in the world, including China, Japan, South Korea, Brazil, Paraguay, Thailand and Malaysia, have approved the use, and the ADI value of stevioside is 5.5 mg/kg. As of 2000, it has not been approved by Europe and the United States and other countries. In the past 10 years, the FDA has refused to approve its food additive status three times. However, on September 18, 1995, the FDA approved it as a "dietary supplement" (DietarySupplement) for sale and consumption.
