Eucalyptus oil is extracted by steam distillation of eucalyptus leaves and branches. Eucalyptus oil is a colorless to pale yellow liquid with an odor like camphor and borneol. The main component of eucalyptus oil extraction is cineole, with a content of 70%-90%, and a small amount of aldehydes and terpenes. The extraction of eucalyptus oil is used in the preparation of cough suppressant, mouthwash, insect repellant ointment and essence of toothpaste, tooth powder, candy and so on.

Eucalyptus varieties include blue eucalyptus, straight stalk eucalyptus, Smith eucalyptus, large leaf eucalyptus, small leaf eucalyptus, red eucalyptus, etc. Among them, blue eucalyptus and straight stalk eucalyptus are the main species used to extract eucalyptus oil. Eucalyptus oil contains eucalyptol. It is a colorless or light yellow liquid with a pungent and cool fragrance. It is mainly used in toothpaste, mouthwash, food and medicine. Blue eucalyptus and straight-stem eucalyptus are excellent species, and eucalyptus leaf oil is extracted from their branches and leaves, with the best texture.

Eucalyptus eucalyptus leaves and young branches can be used for steaming oil, and the oil content accounts for 0.75-1.5% of the weight of fresh leaves. April to September is the best time to harvest leaves for oil steaming, the average oil yield is 1-1.7%, and the content of eucalyptol in eucalyptus oil accounts for 63-73%. The oil yield is low in winter, and the eucalyptol contained in it only accounts for 60-65%. The oil content of the top branches of the canopy is higher than that of the lower branches.
