In 2006, the medical journal Osteoarthritis and Cartilage published conclusive data on MSM and its efficacy in relieving knee pain associated with osteoarthritis. This led to a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial involving 50 men and women aged 40-76 years (all with osteoarthritis-related knee pain). The researchers used a dosing regimen of 6 g MSM per day (divided into two doses) for 12 weeks, and the results speak for themselves. Patients taking methanesulfonylmethane experienced significantly less pain, while their physical function improved. In addition, those who took MSM also improved their performance in daily activities compared to the placebo group. Needless to say, the scientists concluded that DMSO did help reduce symptoms of pain and physical discomfort. They also stated that no major side effects of MSM were observed throughout the trial.

In a 2016 study, the Journal of Sports Medicine set out on a mission to find out whether MSM could be effective in treating post-exercise inflammation. The clinical trial included only physically active men who received either placebo or real mesylmethane at a dose of 3 g/day for 28 days. They did MSM or placebo first, and then did 100 eccentric knee stretches. After those 28 days, the researchers came to a conclusion. Their collective data indicate that MSM (as an active antioxidant) blunts tissue damage and all resulting inflammation. By doing this, MSM can actually prevent white blood cells from dying. Leukocytes are white blood cells involved in fighting various immune threats to the body.
